President defends new red, white and blue paint

President Trump reportedly wants to overhaul the look of Air Force One with a paint job. Nathan Rousseau Smith has the details.

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump is defending his decision to repaint Air Force One, saying Friday the new red, white and blue color scheme will be a better fit for the presidential plane.

“I think it’s going to look much better actually,” he said during a lengthy interview on Fox and Friends.

Trump unveiled the new colors, which will replace the current cyan, white and blue, in a separate interview with ABC News on Tuesday.

“I like the concept of red, white and blue,” he said.

The modified Boeing 747 has had the same colors since 1962, when President John F. Kennedy commissioned the plane. The 32-year-old planes are due to be retired soon, and the Air Force has a contract with Boeing to replace the 747s. Last summer, the White House announced two planes would be delivered by 2024 at a cost of $3.9 billion.

The paint job on the new planes has drawn disapproval, with some critics noting the colors are similar to those on Trump Shuttle, Trump’s airline that he ran in the mid-90s.

In the Fox interview, Trump acknowledged people have gotten used to the plane’s iconic current colors, which Jackie Kennedy had a hand in designing. But, “the baby blue doesn’t fit with us,” Trump said.

“That was Jackie O, and that’s good,” he said, “but we have our own Jackie O today. It’s called Melania. Melania T.”
