JACKSON, Miss. — Jackson State University was briefly locked down Wednesday and students and staff were urged to take shelter due to an “active shooter,” the school alerted on Twitter.
“We have an active shooter on campus,” the school tweeted. “The suspected shooter is in a black Honda Accord, license plate number MAC 0214. The entire campus community should take shelter immediately. The campus is currently on lock down. We will notify you when the situation is resolved.”
University spokesman L.A. Warren said a person was shot in the leg on the north end of the campus. Neither the victim nor the shooter was a student, authorities said.
The school lifted the lockdown a short time later, saying “the campus community is no longer under threat” of a gunman.
Warren said the vehicle has not been seen on campus since the shooting was reported.
Jackson State is a public, historically black university with an enrollment of about 7,000 students. The school describes itself on its website as a “diverse, technologically-advanced four-year university steeped in history and committed to preparing its students to become global leaders.”
