British Open: Golfweek’s Geoff Shackelford talks about the Dunluce course at Royal Portrush and the famous 16th hole.
Golfweek, USA Today Network
The final round of the British Open gets going early Sunday, the result of a rough forecast for the afternoon and evening that expects to see heavy rain and winds hit Royal Portrush. While the action gets going around 2:32 a.m. ET (!), the leaders are expected to tee off around 8:47 a.m. ET (1:47 p.m. local time).
That final group consists of Shane Lowry, an Irishman, and Tommy Fleetwood, an Englishman. Lowry dazzled the supportive Northern Ireland crowd Saturday as he carded an 8-under 63 to take a four-shot lead over Fleetwood (who’s at 12 under).
Lowry has been in this position before: at the 2016 U.S. Open. In that tournament he saw his four-shot lead in the final round evaporate when he posted a 76 to finish tied for seond behind Dustin Johnson.
One other big name lurking? Brooks Koepka, who sits 7 shots back at 9 under.
